Our Philosophy

With the rapid advancement of dance technique, it's quite easy to overlook the artistic aspect of dance, giving those who look on from the outside the appearance that dance is a sport. Yes, one who is a dancer today must be able to achieve that higher technical standard. But the field is much more competitive now, and it is not uncommon for everyone to have great extensions, multiple turns, and gravity-defying jumps. So how does one get that 'extra edge' with dancing today? We simply look back to the past, when artistry gave its start to the expressive form of dance.

Dance for us is a passion. Dance is a performing art. Our methods in teaching dance are relatively simple, but the results are amazing. As is demanded with other art forms, we stress the importance of a classical base. And because dance is a living art form, it grows with the advances of time. We provide a balanced and fresh mix of yesterday and today, giving dancers the ability to bring about tomorrow. And above it all, we never forget our passion for dance- its artistry.

Our Workshops

Within a seminar setting, we provide the opportunity for dancers to apply their dance techniques in learning the art of performing. One might compare this setup to the audition process, which, as you well know, is the very way a dancer obtains work. Yet ours is a setup within a fun and exciting environment specifically designed for learning. If it is a one day workshop, the students will participate in an intensive class program designed with your needs in mind, and at the day's end will be given a short performance by us, Dancin' Mates!, demonstrating some important points of the day's lessons. The students' classes will be properly balanced between technique and choreographic material in which to exercise their performing skills. Workshops of more than three days will provide the students with specific choreography, which will be rehearsed and performed by the students during our performance upon the conclusion of the last day, in addition to their daily class schedules.

The following contains a short summary of our available curriculum for our Workshops or Guest Classes.

Curriculum

Classical Ballet- A balanced mix of the Royal Academy of Dancing's precise placement with the excellent performing qualities of the Russian style. Grace, elegance, & character roled into one.

Jazz Dance- A smooth, yet accentuated and flashy dance style strongly rooted in Ballet and Modern Dance with a diverse vocabulary borrowed from street dancing. Energetic, and very aesthetic for the stage.

Tap Dance- A 'Hoofin' styled vocabulary of rhythmic sound movement danced mostly with the feet and legs. You won't believe your ears!

Pointe/Pas de Deux- A must for aspiring dancers! The technical standards of today are climbing, and a strong base sets that climb. A nice compliment for all styles of dance, as partnering is universal.

Classical Repertoire- So much to choose from! Whether it's Corps de Ballet, a Pas de deux , or a splendid Variation, learn to perform a Classic from Classics like Swan Lake, The Nutcracker, Don Quixote, Giselle ...

Character Dance- Learning dances from countries full of tradition can be fun, not to mention good for musicality and stage personality. Choose from Russian, Hungarian, or Polish divertissements.

Musical Repertoire- Whether from the West End, Broadway, or Hollywood, there are so many astounding numbers to choose from. Our present repertoire includes choreography from A Chorus Line/The Movie, CATS, West Side Story, 7 Brides for 7 Brothers, Singing In The Rain, Anything Goes ....

Stage Crafts- A class geared especially for our performers, where students can nourish their curiosities about the secrets of the trade, learn some tips about auditioning and performance know-how, and perhaps even participate in a short performance with Dancin' Mates!.

Our Sample Workshop Schedule

The following suggests a sample schedule for a one day, split-level workshop. We generally gear the level for the Juniors between 8-12 towards Beginning-Intermediate, and for the Seniors; Intermediate/Advanced. We always encourage those teachers who also want to dance to join the Senior students (though not required), and the students usually love it! It is recommended that two big rooms be used if different levels are to be established as to utilize time more efficiently. It is possible to work with only one large room, but only one level or half the material can be covered in a given day (See Guest Classes).

Guest Classes

Dance Workshops aren't for every dance school. Perhaps your needs require that things remain more intimate, or perhaps you have limited space and time. Then our Guest Classes might interest you.

Our Guest Classes are quite similar to our Workshops, but even more flexible. We offer the same curriculum as with our Workshops (except for Stage Crafts and the Dancin' Mates! Performance), yet our Guest Classes are specifically designed to cater to your smaller needs. For example, perhaps you have only one room and it is impossible to organize a split-level enrolment as is recommended for our Workshops. Or maybe your needs require only Ballet & Jazz, or just Tap. Perhaps a shorter day, or a small course suits you better. This is what our Guest Classes are about.

Our Guest Classes are also a great opportunity to better aquaint you with our standard of excellence without the total cost of a big workshop.

Studio Competitions & Scholarships

A Studio Competition is an excellent way in preparing your students for an upcoming Eisteddfod, Exam, or for any performance in general. A Studio Scholarship Audition achieves this goal too, as well as luring a few of your indecisive students into more serious study. If you already offer these services at your school, you are well aware of the value a professional adjudicator brings to your service as well as the adrenaline boost these professional outsiders give to your students. Dancin' Mates! can be your professional opinion and provide you with 2 adjudicators for the price of one.

If you do not yet offer services such as these at your school but wish to do so, Dancin' Mates! can help you organize the event and adjudicate for you, all at a reasonable price. With Dancin' Mates!, you're in the hands of professionals who care.

Audition Simulations

If you have students preparing for an audition tour and embarking upon a career as a performer, or simply just interested in learning something about the process, perhaps we can interest you with our AUDITION SIMULATION. As a separate entity, or in connection with both our Workshops and Guest Classes, we conduct a simulated professional audition for either a musical performer or a company dancer. We believe this is an excellent preparation for students who wish to audition, as this helps them cope with the pressures of audition fright as well as giving them a dress rehearsal for any upcoming auditions. We give professional-quality constructive criticism designed to help advance the student for the actual audition. With so few auditions being given in Australia today, one can't afford to waste an audition for experience's sake. So provide your students with that invaluable experience, and help them to shine when it does count!

Our Rates

Flexibility is a service we offer in our pricing as well as our teaching and coaching. We have no fixed pricing structure because of the many factors influencing the costs of providing our services. We aim to work with you, and to charge only what you can afford.

Our quotes are inversely related to the size of the job we are asked to perform, meaning in layman's talk: the more we do, the less it costs per class. We also encourage the longer events not only as it is cost beneficial, but your students achieve a greater consistency in our methods which enhances their understanding and thus the value of your money.

When figuring a quote, we offer our regular customers preferential rates because we value our customer's repeat business, which is contrary to many business practices today that offer discounts for new accounts and then charge more for continuation or renewal rates.

We welcome the opportunity to meet with you in person to discuss your needs and offer you a reasonable quote. But most importantly, we welcome the opportunity to work with your students and provide you and your school with services you will want year after year, services that compliment the professional standard your school has and deserves.
